Eddie Redmayne, Alex Sharp, Sacha Baron Cohen | In Chicago in 1968, the Democratic Party Convention was met with protests by activists such as Moderate Students for the Democratic Society led by Tom Hayden and Yippies militants led by Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin, sparking violent clashes with local officials. As a result, seven of the guilty suspects were charged with conspiracy by the hostile Nixon government, including Bobby Seale of the Black Panthers, who was not involved in the incident. What follows is an unfair trial presided over by Judge Hoffman (unrelated), who fought and was sued by the reluctant but duty-bound Richard Schultz. When his pro bono attorneys face such difficulties, Hayden and his colleagues are frustrated by the Yippies’ outrageous behavior, which undermines their defense by deviating from the system, even when Seale doesn’t have a chance to defend himself. Along the way, Chicago 7 clashes with their political philosophies, even as they learn that they need each other in this fight.
