Carefully crafted, but also heavy and predictable, James Cameron’s 1989 undersea drama reinforces one of cinema’s oldest tenets: everything moves more slowly underwater. Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, married petroleum engineers with some unresolved “problems”, are called to assist a Navy SEAL (Michael Biehn) in a top secret rescue operation: a nuclear submarine is attacked and captured. it sank under mysterious conditions in some of the deepest waters on Earth, and Petrotechs has the only submarine that can dive that far. Every frame and action is sharp and detailed (and the computer-controlled aquatic animals are cool), but the film’s fast pace kills it. It is the audience that ends up feeling drunk. For a gun-loving man like Cameron (whose next film was Terminator 2: Judgment Day), it’s interesting that the moral balance here is heavily weighted in favor of skilled engineers. Military types are ends to justify righteous means, such as foreigners’ miserly bureaucrats.

This is the only true versionof the widescreen anamorphic Abyss ever released, all other regional versions are limited to black bars and a very low resolution. Other regional releases also cut parts of the film, adding another 28 minutes to the film.

This ReEncoded version is completely uncut and for the first time true widescreen.

This was encoded by myself, from the Hijacker = Uncut Special Edition = DVD.
