Meticulously crafted yet stunning and predictable, James Cameron’s 1989 deep-sea epic reaffirms one of cinema’s oldest tenets: everything moves much more slowly underwater. Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, as ex-petroleum engineers with some “problems” to work out, are called in to help an eager Navy SEAL (Michael Biehn) with a top-secret salvage operation: a completed nuclear submarine. they are hidden and sunk under mysterious circumstances in some of the deepest waters on Earth, and the Petrochechs have the only submarine that can dive that far. Every frame and performance is incredibly sharp and detailed (and the computer-controlled aquatic creatures are beautiful), but the film’s plodding pace is ultimately fatal. It is the audience that ultimately feels satiated. Interestingly, for a man who enjoys photography as much as Cameron does (his next film was the masterpiece Terminator 2: Judgment Day), this moral balance swings heavily in favor of engineers who can; military types are amoralists to justify meanings, just like the poor government bureaucrats in Aliens.

This is the only true anamorphic widescreen version of The Abyss ever released, literally every other regional version is cropped with black bars and therefore very low resolution, other regional versions also had parts of the movie cut out – adding an extra 28 minutes to the movie adds movie.

This transcoded version is completely uncut and for the first time in true widescreen.

This has been personally coded by me, the Carjacker of the =Uncut Special Edition=DVD.
